Mr. Jake Walburn
Visiting Assisting Professor of Trumpet
Jake Walburn is Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Oklahoma State University. Jake earned his BM from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, his MM from The University of Southern Mississippi, and is currently completing a DMA at the University of Illinois. His primary teachers include Tito Carrillo (jazz), Todd Davidson, Michael Ewald, Ronald Romm, and Joel Treybig.
Jake has performed extensively throughout the Unites States, including performances with the Illinois Brass Quintet, the Southern Arts Brass Quintet, the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, the Perrysburg (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra, the Meridian (Mississippi) Symphony Orchestra, and the Southern Arts Pro Musica. He performed at the 1998 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Lexington, KY, and at the 2002 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Manchester, England. Jake has performed at well known concert venues throughout the United States, including performances at Carnegie Hall with the University of Illinois Wind Symphony, at Orchestra Hall in Chicago with the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra, and as a guest brass artist with the Southern Chorale at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
In 2003, Jake performed the Mississippi premiere of Robert Bradshaw's "Sonata" as part of its "50 State World Premiere Project. He as a two-time winner of the Band Concerto Competition at the University of Southern Mississippi, and has performed as a soloist with the University of Southern Mississippi Wind Ensemble, the USM Concert Band, and with the Southern Arts Pro Musica.
Jake has performed as lead or split-lead trumpet with the top jazz ensembles at the University of Illinois, The University of Southern Mississippi, and Bowling Green State University, and has played at various jazz festivals throughout the U.S., including the North Texas Jazz Festival and the Notre Dame Jazz Festival. He has also performed in the pit for over 20 professional musical theatre productions, including "Hairspray", "The Music Man", "Les Miserables", "A Chorus Line", "Carousel", "Brigadoon", "The Pajama Game", "Crazy for You", and "Hello Dolly". The list of performers Jake has performed with includes Placido Domingo, Doc Severinsen, Bobby Shew, Eddie Daniels, Carl Allen, Edward Tarr, John Hagstrom, Steve Wiest, and Christopher Parkening.
Jake has taught applied trumpet at the University of Illinois and the University of Southern Mississippi, and was director of the University of Illinois Trumpet Ensemble from 2005-2007. He has been active as a chamber music coach at the collegiate and high school level, and has maintained an active private teaching studio since 1995.
