Overview
The Department of Music offers a wide variety of programs in music, while reinforcing other degree programs of the University. Music at OSU is designed to increase one's understanding and appreciation of music through the development of skills as a performer, listener, and composer.
The Bachelor of Music degree has three options: Music Performance; Music Education (instrumental and vocal); and a Music Business option. The Music Business option contains a large business component (accounting, economics, management) and is designed for students considering careers in arts management, advertising, publication, music merchandising, and recording industry management. Music Education students augment their courses in music with education studies and practice teaching, preparatory to state certification in teaching. Music Performance concentrates on a student?s instrument for those who seek a performing career. These degrees, as well as the Bachelor of Arts with a Music major, also offer excellent preparation for graduate school.
Apart from these strong degree programs, the Music Department provides specialized concentration on virtually every instrument and voice, a variety of professional and preprofessional training opportunities, and more than 15 performing ensembles. More than 100 concerts are presented each year by artists of national and international reputation, faculty, and students.
The Department is staffed by an artist-faculty of 25, and is housed in the Seretean Center for Performing Arts. This excellent facility provides a 600-seat theater, 900-seat Concert Hall, a large music multi-media lab, practice rooms, and ample space for studio, classroom and ensemble instruction.
We invite you to visit the campus, attend classes, rehearsals and concerts, and meet with faculty and students to gain first-hand knowledge of the Department and its programs.
