OSU String Academy and Chamber Orchestra

The string area of Oklahoma State University is proud to announce the debut of the OSU String Academy and Chamber Orchestra. The OSUSA will offer a string chamber orchestra, chamber music instruction, and music theory classes to interested high school students at the Seretean Center on the OSU campus. All programs will be led by OSU music faculty, with assistance from OSU music majors.

Auditions

Auditions will be held on May 12th and 19th, 2009 at the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts on the OSU campus. Please fill out and send in the attached application form. An audition time will be confirmed via email. You may play a solo of your choice, or the required etude for NCHO or All-State (or equivalent). There is no scale or sight-reading requirement at this time.

Auditions after May 19th can be made by appointment. Please contact Douglas Droste at douglas.droste@okstate.edu. An additional audition day will also be added in August.

Chamber Orchestra

OSUSA students will rehearse and perform in a chamber orchestra, conducted by Douglas Droste. The ensemble will rehearse weekly, and perform repertoire from the late Baroque to the present day. At least one concert will be presented each semester.

Chamber Music Program

OSUSA students can elect to participate in the Academy’s Chamber Music Program. String chamber music includes some of the most inspiring music ever written. This program will provide students the opportunity to explore this repertoire, as they rehearse and perform as members of small ensembles such as string quartets and string trios. Ensembles will meet weekly with an OSU string area faculty member for coaching either immediately before or after the OSUSA Chamber Orchestra rehearsal. Throughout the semester, guest artists visiting OSU will offer master classes for the student ensembles in addition to their weekly coaching. The semester will culminate in a performance in the Seretean Center Concert Hall at OSU.

Music Theory

OSUSA students can elect to take music theory classes with Dr. Igor Karaca, OSU Assistant Professor of Theory and Composition. This course will meet weekly and incorporate basic music fundamentals often taught in the first semester of college music theory.
