Scholarships

Oklahoma State University offers many different kinds of financial assistance. As part of caring about you, the Music Department wants you to have all the information you need to apply for whatever scholarships you might qualify to receive.

Music scholarship awards recognize your musical attainment and potential; they are determined by the Music Faculty primarily on the basis of your entrance audition. Music scholarships range in amount from small grants to the prestigious Presser Foundation Scholarship ($4000 a year) and most awards are continued from year to year for students making satisfactory progress. Music Scholarships are available both to music majors and to non-music majors who participate in ensembles. Music scholarships may be added to whatever academic scholarship you might already have received, but it is not necessary to hold an academic scholarship to win a music scholarship.

Audition Dates:

Call 405-744-6133 to set up an audition.

Audition Tips:

When selecting an audition piece, consider one of several options:

  • Solo material suitable for district/state contest.
  • All-state audition material (instrumental only).
  • Vocalists, do not bring gospel, popular, or Christian contemporary selections.
  • Call to verify selections if unsure.
  • Are you multi-talented? If so, audition in more than one area or instrument! Be certain to list all of your talents on the application.
  • Dress comfortably, and be prepared to perform in a non-threatening environment. We want to know the extent of your ability and your potential for growth.
  • Ask questions! We want you to know all that is necessary for you to make an intelligent decision when selecting a university.

Financial Aid:

As a comprehensive university, OSU administers state and federal "entitlement" programs which distribute many thousands of dollars each year to needy students. These programs, which include guaranteed student loans, work-study programs, and outright grants, are based on your family's income and ability to pay for college costs. For information call 405-744-6604. If in Oklahoma City area call 405-235-1414, or if in Tulsa area call 918-584-0300.

Academic Scholarships:

These awards are based on your high school record (especially your grade point average) and your test scores (ACT, SAT, or National Merit). These OSU awards are virtually automatic. More information is available at any time by toll-free telephone 800-233-5019 (Oklahoma students only) or 800-852-1255 (outside Oklahoma). Other important numbers are High School and College Relations, 405-744-5358, and Office of Scholar Development & Recognition, 405-744-7313.

Important Considerations:

It is important to remember that the real value of a scholarship offer is not merely the total amount of the scholarship itself, but rather the difference between the real costs (tuition, room and board, etc.) and whatever scholarship package you are offered in total. OSU is noted for providing a high quality education at a very reasonable cost, and that fact directly increases the true value of any scholarship you might receive from us.

As you and your parents consider the important decision you will soon be making about where to go to college, we want you to know that we are excited about the spirit of success here at the Oklahoma State University Music Department. We hope you will want to become a part of our spirit.
